City tax in Morocco: how it works
Definition : City tax (taxe de séjour) is a local tax collected from guests, per person and per night, by the business that hosts them.
City tax, or taxe de séjour, is a local tax that an accommodation business collects from each guest, per person per night, and then passes on to the local authority. It is added to the price of the stay and has to be tracked separately.
A lot of information circulates on this subject, often with different amounts from one site to the next. This guide explains the principle; the exact amount depends on your commune.
How it is calculated
The principle is always the same: amount per person per night × number of people concerned × number of nights. Fictional example, with an amount of 10 MAD: 2 adults for 3 nights = 2 × 3 × 10 = 60 MAD. The real amount is your commune’s.
City tax and tourism promotion tax
Depending on the commune and the type of business, a guest may be charged a tourism promotion tax on top of city tax. Ask your commune what applies to you.
Mistakes to avoid
- Not showing it clearly before booking: the guest should know it exists
- Forgetting to collect it on platform bookings: depending on the platform and the payment method, it may not be included in the amount paid online
- Mixing it into the nightly price, which distorts your average price and your figures
- Not tracking what has been collected and what remains to be passed on
Where to find the exact amount
From the communal tax office or the prefecture of your city, which applies the scale in force. Note the amount and the date you last checked it, and update it in your tool when it changes.
